20 minute meditation journal

the cool morning air is wonderful in my skin as I sit in the back verandah. The birds are crazy loud this morning and so many different species.  Kookaburras magpies pigeons noisy minors.  They are making lots of songs. Perhaps the birds should be my focus instead of my breathing. I guess we are all trying to savour the cool morning before the promised 40+ temperatures later.
I wonder how the birds know that it is going to be a scorcher? I'm sure they don't have a weather app

Nearer freezing here!

Why not try focusing on the birds, even as a one off, to see how that goes for you? Or allowing them into your attention as well as the breath? I know people who aim to mix a focus on the breath (about 30% of their attention) and a focus on surrounding sensations including sounds. Whether this works for you at the moment might depend on whether you then get caught up in thoughts about the sounds ( I like this one, I don't like that one etc) . Worth a try maybe.

Practice, in zen at least, is I find in part becoming really intimate with our lives not cutting ourselves off from them. That includes surrounding sounds :)
